Step-in versus over-the-head

Step-in harnesses suit dogs who dislike anything coming over their face, which is a lot of dogs and nearly all rescues with an unknown history. The dog puts their front feet through two loops and it buckles across the back. No hands near the head at all.

The trade-off is that a step-in gives slightly less shoulder coverage than a vest, so it is a better fit for light pullers than for a dog who really leans.

Getting a nervous dog into it

Lay it flat on the floor with food on top for a few days before you ever fasten it. Let the dog investigate it as an object first. Harness resistance is almost always about the fitting process, not the harness.
